Kay organized a paint party at Jimmy's on Saturday! It was super last minute but I'm really glad I went! Jimmy's have a really nice back patio that is perfect for painting! Plus the drinks are amazing :)
I started with composition and value sketches with crayons. Then I dive in with painting! I usually start with a wash of really bright saturated colour, this time neon yellow and green! Then I fill in all my dark, then work my way up the value scale.
I learned next time I should start with the main subject/ focus point, in this case the bike, and paint everything else in relation to the bike. This would have saved me so much more time!
This piece was really challenging because the scene is so clustered and it had a really interesting lighting. I had a lot of trouble simplifying and breaking down all the different shapes. But I prevailed!
3.5" by 3.5" on 5 by 7 Crescent 310 illustration board. Painted with Holbein acryla gouache . My favourite combination at the moment!
Kay's pastel play!
Kay started with several value studies in her sketchbook . Then proceed to paint/draw with pastel. It was kinda amazing to see her draw with what I feel is such an uncontrollable medium haha. Especially with how she managed to keep everything so clean and neat, both on paper and around her!
Tip on painting chairs in a coffee shop, people will probably and most likely sit in them! Kay had to move it back in position to finish her painting XD
